The beginnings of Classical Music in Korea

Nowadays, the Korean musicians hold the leading position in the field of western classical music worldwide. The objective of this bachelor thesis is to introduce the beginnning of the classical music on the Korean peninsula. It is a period from the arrival of the first protestant missionaries after the opening of Korea to world event in 1876 until time of the Japanese occupation. The thesis explores missionaries who spreaded christianity together with western hymns and assembled first korean hymnbooks. It introduces the muzikologist Franz Eckert, the founder of the military band and the composer of the state national hymn of the Korean Empire, and first insititutions which offered education in western music.
